Weavers Academy Leads a Golden Night of Myth and Music at The Castle Theatre

On Wednesday 18th June, The Castle Theatre in Wellingborough played host to a truly heroic night of drama, music, and myth as 257 Year 5 pupils from six local primary schools took to the stage for Jason and the Golden Fleece—a dazzling production led by Weavers Academy that sold out weeks in advance.
Pupils from Olympic Primary, Our Lady’s Primary, Earls Barton Primary, Irchester Primary, Redwell Primary, and Victoria Primary joined forces as a massed choir, while 20 students from Weavers Academy starred as the main cast. This ambitious production, now in its third successful year as part of an annual collaboration project, once again proved the power of the performing arts to unite communities, inspire confidence, and spark creativity.
A Journey of Mythical Proportions
The show followed the legendary journey of Jason and his ragtag crew of Argonauts as they set sail in search of the fabled Golden Fleece. With a script full of wit, charm, and a delightfully sarcastic narrator in the form of Pelias, the story unfolded through a rich tapestry of musical numbers—each chosen to match the energy and emotion of the moment.
From the cheeky camaraderie of Consider Yourself to the uproarious Kung Fu Fighting during King Amycus’s boxing match, the audience was treated to a theatrical feast. Living on a Prayer delivered drama and suspense during the daring Clashing Rocks scene, and Roar featured one of the night’s most memorable comic moments: Jason being hilariously chased around the stage by two inflatable cows during his battle with fire-breathing bulls and stone soldiers.
The Showstopper: A Mash-Up to Remember
But the undoubted high point of the night—and a moment that had both the audience and the young performers buzzing—was the breathtaking mash-up of How Far I’ll Go and A Million Dreams, performed during the Sirens scene.
This emotional and musically complex number brought all the voices together in stunning harmony and showed off the full vocal range of the Year 5 choir. From the first note to the last, the mash-up had the entire theatre transfixed. It was not only the best performance of the night, but a shining example of the talent, commitment, and teamwork behind the entire show.
The pupils loved singing it, the audience erupted in applause, and many cited it as their favourite moment of the evening—an uplifting anthem of ambition, wonder, and adventure.
A True Community Celebration
The show closed with Dancing in the Street, as all 257 pupils filled the stage in a joyous celebration of their shared journey. The performance was a powerful reminder of what young people can achieve when they’re given the chance to be bold, creative, and supported.
Staff from Weavers Academy guided rehearsals and production throughout, ensuring every pupil—from those in the choir to the leads on stage—felt part of something special. The production has grown year on year in both scale and ambition, and it’s clear the experience left a lasting impact on all involved.
Feedback from schools and families was heartfelt and unanimous in its praise. One teacher from Earls Barton Primary said, “I just wanted to message to say well done and thank you for a brilliant experience and evening on Wednesday. The kids loved it and it was an amazing show.” The message was so meaningful, it was shared again by staff the next day. Irchester Primary echoed the sentiment: “Well done tonight – another brilliant performance. Thank you for giving our pupils the opportunity to take part.”
Parents were equally full of praise. “An incredible show! Thank you all so much for your hard work and offering this experience to the children!” shared one. Another added, “Just want to pass my thanks on for a great evening. It was really enjoyable and I’m sure many kids caught the musical theatre bug from performing or attending it.”
Looking Ahead
With three successful years behind it, this annual project has become a much-anticipated event on the school calendar. Plans are already underway for next year’s adventure: The Tales of Odysseus—a new chapter of myth, monsters, and musical magic.
If Jason and the Golden Fleece is anything to go by, next year’s show promises even more unforgettable moments, community spirit, and opportunities for young voices to shine brightly on stage.
