KS3

The creative carousel is a broad and balanced curriculum offering students the experience of Food Technology, Textiles, Graphics, Photography and 3D sculpture in KS3.

Students have the chance to learn and explore a wealth of creative new skills within these subject areas. Learning in Design Technology is purposeful and relevant as students in all lessons see a direct link to industry, a career, and the influence of technology on our past, present and future. Students within DT use their creativity and imagination across a variety of disciplines to plan, design and make prototypes/dishes that solve real world problems. Students build their knowledge in many theoretical areas including contemporary technologies, materials and processes, nutrition and current world topics including sustainability.

The vision for learners in Design Technology is to progress from Year 7 to Year 9 as independent, collaborative and competent students that can analyse, problem solve, design, reflect, apply, make and evaluate.

In KS3 these are the core themes and topics that are key within the subject discipline.

  • Designing principles
  • Making principles
  • Technical Knowledge
  • Analysis and Evaluation

The Graphics department is part of the Creative carousel in KS3 to explore a wealth of creative new skills. Students within Graphics use their creativity and imagination across a variety of disciplines to plan, design and make prototypes in response to briefs reflecting the Creative industry. Students build their knowledge throughout the key stage in many areas including technical drawing, contemporary technologies and processes giving students further opportunity to explore the arts in multiple areas.

The Graphics Curriculum is structured carefully sequencing lessons to continually build on the strong foundations each year to develop, extend and apply the knowledge, understanding and skills in response to key disciplines. This includes advertising and branding, typography, package design, illustration and drawing techniques. This will also be achieved through the learning journey by nurturing and inspiring students developing their understanding of the visual world and supporting them to approach briefs, to communicate their ideas and to realise their personal intentions.

Textiles

The Textiles department is part of the Creative carousel in KS3 to explore a wealth of creative new skills. We aim to achieve this through energising and enthusing students through engaging lessons providing students to be curious, aware and open to the opportunity of experimenting with a wide range of media. This is in response to the disciplines of textiles whilst developing practical, technical and critical skills and making connections to the work of artists, designers and practitioners.

The Textiles curriculum is structured carefully sequencing lessons from the introduction of sewing both hand & machine techniques, 2D to 3D textiles & surface decoration skills, through to developing the understanding of materials and the creation of own fabrics. This is extended to embedding contextual understanding and functionality. This is in association with the formal elements and the transferrable skills developing in Art.

Food

Food technology curriculum provides students with a high-quality curriculum that inspires, challenges, and engages students. Knowledge and practical skills underpin the learning and delivery of tasks that stretch students and develop routes to excellence. Students will encounter diversity, different cultures and beliefs and their impact on food across the world. Students will understand lifestyle choices and their impacts on the environment.

Students will develop their understanding of food safety, knife skills, the importance of the Eatwell Guide, food preparation techniques including the use of the hob and oven. Students will use a wide range of ingredients and cooking methods through following set instructions and recipes. They will develop their understanding of nutrition and healthy eating enabling them to prepare family meals and develop a knowledge of food science.

Photography

The sequence of lessons throughout KS3 photography introduces, builds and enhances both knowledge and skills of a range of creative processes and techniques. This is using both DSLR and compact cameras to explore their environment and local contexts. Students become proficient in using computers, digital processes and creative digital media to manipulate imagery. It seeks to inspire challenge and engage.

Furthermore, the skills builder is embedded in the journey of this curriculum. It allows students to combine these characteristics using the formal elements of photography to change the meaning of their photographs and communicate their ideas effectively. This is achieved by introducing the formal elements of photography using cameras, computer functions and photoshop exploring personal interests. This is, embedded by experimenting with light sources digital manipulation and editing techniques. This study continues by consolidating the formal elements through independent questioning of techniques to express a message, thought and idea.

3D sculpture

Students will explore, acquire and develop skills, knowledge and understanding of the application of techniques and processes in 3D sculpture. Students will design, create prototyping and modelling for both functional and aesthetic products and objects.

Students will refine their ideas through researching, selecting, analysing, constructing and creating personal outcomes using constructing material in three-dimensions. Drawing will support the design processes and students will learn the health and safety procedures of materials, techniques, processes and technology.

Graphics

Students will be able to explore, research and acquire techniques and develop their skills, knowledge and understanding in a range of media specific to Graphic Communication.

Students will explore relevant images, text, design and resources relating to Graphic Communication. Traditional methods such as drawing, printing and digital techniques will be used to produce graphic images to demonstrate specialisation in particular materials, media or processes.

Students will experiment and develop their work utilising image editing, digital manipulation, layout, presentational and editorial techniques, printing, mark making, collage and construction techniques.

On this course, students are required to complete:

  • Component 1 60% Personal investigation. This is a practical investigation supported by written material.
  • Component 2 40% Externally Set Assignment.

Both components students will be able to demonstrate:

  • AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.
  • AO2: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.
  • AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.
  • AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
