Our core aim is to teach students to express themselves fluently via speech, reading and writing to develop them culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially, and spiritually ensuring equitable choices are available to all. This allows pupils to view themselves and the world around them within the texts they read, but also a world beyond the realm of their current context and experience. By providing frequent and purposeful opportunities through guided practise students are continually refining their skills and deepening their knowledge.
When we read, we are transported: we open gateways to different worlds, cultures, eras and views. When we write, we have the power to transport others. The study of English at Weavers Academy provides students with an aspirational cohesive curriculum that enables students to understand the richness of human thought and the complexity of the human condition. Students will explore big questions and powerful concepts central to our humanity: conflict, relationships, power, and society.
Our aim is to unlock potential, inspire learning, and empower students to develop their own voice and vision.
Key Stage 3:
In Key Stage Three students will study high quality texts from a range of time periods anchored by thematic links such as: difference, revolution, prejudice, exploitation, and war. Students will engage with a selection of Shakespearian tragedy, 19thcentury prose including a range of gothic texts, Sherlock Holmes and Jane Eyre; the drama ‘Noughts and Crosses’ and the novel ‘Lord of the Flies’. They will study a variety of poetry from Romantic to the modern period exploring a variety of poetic voices. Students will also study significant events and ideas throughout history via non-fiction to develop their skills in reading analytically and critically as well as engaging with the oracy and rhetoric to articulate their views and perspectives.
Key Stage 4:
GCSE English Language
Paper 1: Unseen modern fiction prose extract where students will analyse language and structure as well as evaluate opinion. Students will then write a descriptive or narrative piece.
Paper 2: One unseen 19th century extract and one unseen modern extract connected by theme/topic.

Paper 1: ‘Macbeth’ and A Christmas Carol.

A Level Language and Literature
Paper 1: Paris, Frankenstein and Duffy Poetry
Paper 2: The Great Gatsby recreative task and ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’
NEA: The NEA task requires an independent study of literary and non-literary texts which have been selected by students in light of their investigation aims and focus (2500-3000 words)
