Meet Lily

Our Therapy Dog is starting work at Weavers Academy to help support our students with mental health, safeguarding and reading provisions. She will be in school each week.
We are thrilled to announce that Weavers Academy is welcoming a new furry friend to our school community – a school dog named Lily! Lily is a 10-year-old, friendly, gentle, Bichon Frise cross who has been working as a therapy/wellbeing dog in local schools for 9 years. She is hypoallergenic and does not shed any fur. She has been assessed to ensure she is well-equipped to handle the demands of a school environment. Lily has completed specific training to ensure that she is well trained for being around children.
Studies have shown that school dogs can have a multitude of positive impacts on our students:
- Reduced stress and anxiety: The presence of a dog can lower cortisol levels, a hormone associated with stress, and create a sense of calm and relaxation. This can be particularly beneficial for students who experience anxiety or social difficulties.
- Enhanced social interaction and empathy: Dogs can act as social bridges, encouraging students to interact with each other and fostering empathy and compassion. This can help students develop their social skills and build stronger relationships.
- Improved reading and literacy skills: Reading aloud to a dog can boost student confidence and reduce anxiety associated with reading aloud in front of peers. Studies have shown that students who read to dogs tend to improve their reading fluency and comprehension.
- Promote responsibility and care for others: Caring for a school dog can teach students valuable lessons about responsibility, empathy, and compassion. They learn to understand the needs of others and develop a sense of empathy and kindness.
Lily will be starting her work at Weavers Academy over the next few weeks gradually integrating into the school environment. She will be used as a therapy dog, providing companionship, comfort, and stress relief for students. She will also be involved in reading and literacy activities, helping students develop their reading skills and confidence.
We are confident that Lily will be a valuable asset to our school community, bringing joy, comfort, and learning opportunities to our students. We encourage you to share this exciting news with your children and let them know to look out for Lily when she arrives.
A full risk assessment has taken place and is available to view on our school website.
We know that some of you may have concerns about children with possible allergies to dogs. Even though Lily is Hypoallergenic we would ask that you let us know by emailing enquiries@weaversacademy.org.uk if your child has an allergy in order for us to be able to keep a log of those students.
Thank you for your continued support of Weaver's Academy. We look forward to welcoming Lily and sharing the many benefits she will bring to our school.
If you would like to speak to us about the school dog, please do not hesitate to contact us. You are also welcome to meet Lily yourselves.
