This qualification provides an engaging introduction to the world of Travel and Tourism, giving students the opportunity to develop knowledge and technical skills in a practical learning environment.
You will explore some of the key areas within the sector, including accommodation, tourism promotion, transport, and visitor attractions. You will investigate the importance of the Travel and Tourism sector to the UK and investigate different types of customer and UK destinations. You will also study the range of factors which influence the international travel and tourism industry. It is aimed at learners who want to acquire sector-specific applied knowledge through vocational contexts
How is the subject structured?
The subject has three components: Travel and Tourism Organisations and Destinations; Customer Needs in Travel and Tourism and Influences on Global Travel and Tourism. Each component has its own assessment marking criteria.
Assessments
The three components in the qualification give learners the opportunity to develop broad knowledge and understanding of the travel and tourism sector, and relevant transferable skills such as research and communication skills at Levels 1 and 2. There is also an Internal assessment that is externally moderated.
Components 1 and 2
These components are assessed through non-exam internal assessment. The nonexam internal assessment for these components has been designed to demonstrate:
- application of the conceptual knowledge underpinning the sector through realistic tasks
- and activities. This style of assessment promotes deep learning through ensuring the connection between knowledge and practice. The components focus on:
- the development and application of core knowledge and understanding of travel and tourism organisations, tourist destinations, and the needs of different travel and tourism customers; the development and application of skills such as researching types of tourist destinations and holidays
- reflective practice through carrying out research on travel and tourism products and services to make recommendations to meet customer needs.
- Non-exam internal assessment is delivered through Pearson-set assignments. These assignments are set by Pearson, marked by the centre and moderated by Pearson
Component 3 - External synoptic assessment
There is one external assessment, Component 3, which provides the main synoptic assessment for the qualification. Component 3 builds directly on Components 1 and 2 and enables learning to be brought together and applied to realistic contexts.
This component requires learners to apply their knowledge and understanding of the factors influencing tourism, the impact of tourism on destinations, and destination management to travel and tourism contexts.
The design of this external assessment ensures that there is sufficient stretch and challenge, enabling the assessment of knowledge and understanding at the end of the learning period. The external assessment is based on a written assessment that requires learners to demonstrate that they can identify and use effectively an appropriate selection of skills, techniques, concepts, theories and knowledge from across the whole qualification in an integrated way.
The component three exam takes place early into the academic year, in January. Students may be given the option to revise for a subject of their choice if they have achieved the desired outcome for Travel and Tourism.
