Curriculum Intent
The modern world is increasingly interconnected, and every strand of life is shaped by the influence of both small enterprises and global organisations. Understanding how businesses operate is not just useful—it is empowering. Our students engage with the business world every day, whether as customers, innovators, entrepreneurs, or collaborators. Through studying Business, they gain the confidence, insight, and ambition to shape their own futures and contribute meaningfully to a dynamic global community.
At Weavers Academy, we provide a high-quality business education designed to develop students’ curiosity, commercial awareness, and understanding of how organisations operate. Our students are equipped to analyse real world situations, think critically, and make informed decisions. Through studying business, they gain the knowledge and skills needed to navigate an ever-changing global economy and become responsible, forward-thinking citizens.
Specialist subject leaders from across all Creative Education Trust (CET) secondary academies have collaborated to construct a business curriculum that is ambitious, forward-thinking, and designed to meet the needs of the students within our schools. The Business leadership team at Weavers Academy has adapted this shared curriculum to reflect our own local context and the aspirations of our learners.
At its core, our spiralling curriculum is knowledge rich, ensuring that students gain the essential business understanding required to succeed across the subject’s diverse disciplines. Alongside this, authentic and diverse content is woven throughout the curriculum so that every student feels represented, valued, and able to see their place within the modern business landscape.
Our knowledge rich curriculum is complemented by a rigorous and purposeful approach to assessment. Summative end of unit assessments are supported by annual assessments, all of which are used to inform curriculum design and evaluate its impact at a granular level. As with the curriculum itself, these assessments are crafted by subject leaders at our Academy and enriched by effective practice shared across our trust schools.
As students’ progress through their business education, they develop the ability to apply business concepts, terminology, and models to real world scenarios. They learn to interpret data, evaluate strategic decisions, and justify their reasoning using evidence based analysis. Through this, students build the critical thinking, problem-solving, and commercial awareness needed to navigate an ever evolving local, national and global economy and to thrive as informed, responsible, and ambitious young professionals.
The Weavers Academy Business Department has high expectations of all members of its community. We are committed to our Academy’s PRIDE values:

In Business, we are committed to supporting all students to consistently produce work that exceeds expectations and reflects their individual potential. Students are encouraged to show determination and resilience when faced with challenging concepts or real world business scenarios. Through our academy’s embedded ‘climates for learning’, students are empowered to work both collaboratively and independently, developing the professional behaviours and habits that lead to strong outcomes in external assessments and open doors to future opportunities.
Our knowledge rich Business curriculum, tailored to our local context, fosters high levels of engagement by connecting learning to authentic, relevant, and diverse business experiences. These carefully designed curriculum threads ensure that every student feels a sense of belonging and can see themselves represented within the world of business. As they progress, students learn to respect themselves and others, developing the confidence, commercial awareness, and critical thinking skills needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected global economy.
To achieve the expected impact, the Weavers Academy Business curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:

KS4
At Key Stage 4, the Business curriculum is designed to develop students’ understanding of the wide range of business activities and the different ownership structures that influence how decisions are made within organisations. Students explore how the scale of a business affects its ownership, operations, and strategic choices.
Learners study the key functional areas within businesses, as well as the structure and importance of supply chains. The curriculum provides opportunities for students to understand the competitive nature of business and the challenges presented by a dynamic and constantly changing business environment.
Students gain insight into the factors that influence business location decisions and develop a strong understanding of how external influences—such as economic conditions, consumer trends, and seasonality—impact retail businesses and the ways in which they adapt.
A vocational strand of the curriculum enables students to design regional merchandising and promotional materials, offering practical experience highly relevant to those considering starting a small business. In addition, students undertake research into customer service, helping them understand why highquality customer interactions are essential for building profitable, sustainable businesses.
If you want, I can also refine this into a shorter “intent statement” or expand it into a full KS4 curriculum rationale.
WJEC Level 1/2 Vocational Award in Retail Business
WJEC Level 1/2 Vocational Awards (Technical Awards) provide our students with opportunities to study vocational subjects alongside GCSEs and other general and vocational qualifications as part of a broad programme of study. They are primarily designed to offer an experience that focuses on applied learning, i.e., acquiring and applying knowledge, skills and understanding through purposeful tasks set in sector or subject contexts that have many of the characteristics of real work. Our learners have access to Rushden lakes shopping centre that has many retail outlets to help them contextualise their learning. The qualification will encourage our students to make informed choices about a wide range of further learning opportunities and career pathways as well as develop life skills.
Assessment:
The assessment is 40% exam (unit 1) and 60% controlled course works (Unit 2 and 3) set by examination board.

KS5
At Key Stage 5, the Business curriculum provides students with opportunities to deepen their understanding of business ownership structures, organisational design, and the wider business environment across different scales of operation. Students also develop essential knowledge of personal finance and business finance—skills that are vital for success both personally and professionally.
Vocational elements of the curriculum enable students to apply their learning in practical contexts, such as designing a marketing campaign for a business or understanding the processes involved in recruiting staff. These experiences help students build confidence in applying business theory to realworld scenarios.
A student who progresses through both the Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 Business curriculum will be well equipped with the knowledge, skills, and commercial awareness needed to launch their own small enterprise or pursue further study and career pathways in the business sector.
